Crayola crayons have come in many colors since their introduction in 1903 with 8 colors.[1] By 1905, Binney & Smith's Crayola crayon product line had reached 30 colors.[2]In 1949, the number of colors increased to 48. In 1958, the number of colors increased to 64. The 8 fluorescent colors were introduced in 1972, increasing the number of colors to 72. In 1990, the total increased to 80 colors with the introduction of 16 colors and the discontinuation of 8 colors. The 16 new colors were introduced in 1993, increasing the number of colors to 96, with their names chosen in the "Name the New Colors" contest and their names today were the winning names. The 24 new colors were introduced in 1998, increasing the number of colors to 120. While a total of 50 colors have been retired, the total number of existing colors is 170. In 2000, one color was replaced by one "retiring" color. In 2003, four colors were replaced by four "retiring" colors. [3] Along with the regular packs of crayons, there have been many specialty sets, including Silver Swirls,[4] Gem Tones,[5] Pearl Brite,[6] Metallic FX,[7] Magic Scent,[8] Silly Scents,[9] and more.
Several colors have been renamed through the years. In 1958, Prussian Blue was renamed Midnight Blue, supposedly because educators complained that children could not relate to Prussian history. Flesh was renamed Peach in 1962, reflecting the fact that flesh comes in many different colors. Indian Red was renamed Chestnut in 1999, due to concern that children might believe that the color represented the skin color of American Indians,[3] although in fact Indian red is a reddish-brown pigment from India.[3] Torch red was renamed to Scarlet in 2000. Two colors were renamed in 2005: Brink Pink was renamed to Pink Sherbert, and Cranberry was renamed to Blush. Some crayons have also been given temporary names as part of special promotions, such as the 2004 State-Your-Color Contest[10] crayons and the eight Kids' Choice Colors in the 2008 50th anniversary 64-count box.[11]
Standard colors
This is a list of the 170 standard Crayola crayon colors as of 2015. According to its chronology page, each "core color" was introduced in a specific year. The pack added shows what pack the crayon color is added in. Packs come in 4, 8, 12 [not in the U.S.], 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 96, and 120.[3] There were 72 packs and 80 packs, but those packs are discontinued as there were discontinued colors in them. These dates are shown in the table below. The words 'fluorescent,' 'metallic,' 'neon,' and 'pastel' shown in the "Notes" section describe the colors. The hex triplets below are approximately representative of the colors produced by the named crayons. [12] The current version of the 96 pack has some Metallic and Gel FX crayons.
