The following is a list of characters that appear in the Animal Crossing franchise.

Villager

The Villager or Player (村人 Murabito) is a term used for a human character in the Animal Crossing series that is controlled by the player. The Villager's language is Bebebese and their initial appearance is determined by answers given on the ride to the village. The Villager appears as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, and will also appear as an upcoming downloadable character for Mario Kart 8.

Cranky Villagers

The Cranky Villagers are male villagers that are stubborn and are annoyed easily. They are the only deep-voiced villagers and are often recognizable by their frowns. They are generally unpopular with Peppy Villagers and get along easily with Snooty Villagers and other Cranky Villagers. They wake up at 10am each day and if the player tries to enter their house before this time they will be greeted with an angry letter saying, "I'm catching some Z's right now, wake me and REGRET IT". When they are out, they say another angry letter saying, "I'm out now, deal!" They compare themselves to other villagers as being 'older'.

Lazy Villagers

The Lazy Villagers are the male villagers who have a relaxed laid-back lifestyle. In Wild World they may mention reading Chillin' Magazine. They are often insulted by snooty villagers. They wake up at 8am. They are less immature than jock villagers, therefore are more like normal villagers.

Jock Villagers

The Jock Villagers are the male villagers who are athletic and somewhat immature, meeting the American jock stereotype. They are the youngest male villagers. They find it easy to get along with other villagers, but sometimes argue with lazy villagers. The 72 Jock Villagers are these:

Smug Villagers

Smug Villagers are introduced in New Leaf. They are male villagers who are kind and polite and occasionally flirt with the player.

Normal Villagers

The Normal Villagers (known as watashi in the Japanese games) are female villagers who are neutral. They have low self-esteem, enjoy cooking and appear slightly obsessive about cleanliness, a trait which is also found in peppy villagers. They wake up at 5am every day. The 54 Normal Villagers are these:

Peppy Villagers

The Peppy Villagers are female villagers who are incessantly friendly and excitable. They are the youngest female villagers. They are the most similar to jock villagers. There are 56 Peppy Villagers:

Snooty Villagers

The Snooty Villagers are female villagers who are big-headed and arrogant and are often portrayed wearing make-up that match their clothes. They are considered the equivalent to the cranky villagers due to their arrogance and somewhat elderly personality The 54 Snooty Villagers are:

Uchi Villagers

The Uchi Villagers are female villagers with a personality type that was introduced in Animal Crossing: New Leaf that is a mixture of peppy, snooty, and normal personalities. They are caring towards the player and are less vain than Snooty villagers. 'Uchi' is a Japanese word that means 'big sister'.
