Ling Tan whose full name is Tan Mang Ling. Family name is Tan (陈)(陳)(Hokkien dialect) (pinyin: Chen Man Ling), is a Malaysian Chinese model (born 9 October 1974), in Kuala Lumpur.[2] Ling, is the first Supermodel from Southeast Asia and top model of the 90s has changed the face of fashion with her exotic beauty.

Early life

Ling was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.[2][3] She has a younger sister who also a model. Her father was a taxi driver and her mother a seamstress. She was educated in a Chinese school and speaks four dialects of Chinese as well as Malay and English. Ling also studied art and design before beginning her career as a model. Although she is ethnically Chinese, she was born and raised in Malaysia.[2][4]

Discovered and Career beginnings

She participated in an local competition Asian Model Search contest in Malaysia. She took the first placed of Malaysian section. She later went on to be the first runner up in the international finals Asian Model Search in 1994.

Her big break came when she was discovered in a small fashion show while waiting for a friend in a hotel lobby, by an advertising executive.[2][3] Ling then appeared in an ad campaign for Tiger Beer. These commercials propelled Ling to success and she became the hottest modeling sensation in Malaysia.[2][3] European and American designers showing their collections in Malaysia were also impressed with Ling’s runway prowess and encouraged her to move to New York City.[2][3]

Success and acting debut

A runway favourite, Ling has been seen in hundreds of shows in New York, London, Milan, Rome and Paris. According to Fashion Model Directory, she clocked in over 30+ shows in Fall 1997/Winter 1998 and Spring/Summer 1998.

Ling's first catwalk show was Zang Toi's Spring/ Summer 1995 show in November 1994. Ling has appeared on the covers and editorial pages of the world’s top fashion magazines including international editions of Vogue. She was the subject of a twelve page feature story in the prestigious Italian Vogue and an spread in Vogue US and Vogue China. She also appeared on the covers of Vogue Germany in November 1998 edition.[7][8][9] She has also featured in variety editorials magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Condé Nast Traveler, Numéro, Marie Claire, Elle US, Allure, Amica, L'Officiel, Stern, Visionaire, W, O Magazine, New York Magazine and The New York Times Magazine.[10] She alongside with Malaysian shoe designer Jimmy Choo appeared on Prestige Magazines Malaysian edition.[11]

She has appeared in international campaigns for dozens of designers. In addition, Ling has been featured in the advertising campaigns for Ann Taylor’s 50th Anniversary “50 Women”,[12] Banana Republic online ad campaign in Spring 2009, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale's Holiday ad campaign in 2007, Bruno Magli, Clairol, Clinique, Daryl K, De Beer's Diamonds, Estee Lauder, Gap, Gucci, Guess? Jeans, Issey Miyake, J.Crew, Jones New York, La Perla, L'Oreal, Magnum, Matrix, Natori, Neiman Marcus, Nordstorm, Oil of Olay, Old Navy Perfect Summer Ad in Summer 2008, Pantene, Prescriptives, Ralph Lauren, Revlon Hair Color, Tag Heuer, Wolford and Yves Saint Laurent.[1][2][3][6]

Even with all of her amazing accomplishments, Ling still wanted to explore work on the small screen. She has appeared in television commercials for Emporio Armani fragrances, FORD Car, La Poste (France’s postal service) and Pantene Hair Color.[1][2][3][13] Ling was also featured in George Michael’s music video for his hit song "Fast Love".

Ling was the subject of a biography featured on CNN’s Style Network with Elsa Klensch and has appeared on the HBO hit series Sex and The City and CBS hit series Blue Bloods.[6]

After a long hiatus from the runway, Ling was back with a bang when she walked for the Givenchy Fall/Winter 2010 show in Paris and did a video for Polo Ralph Lauren for the Fall 2010 campaign.[14] In 2011, Ling's along with Yasmin Warsame, Elsa Benitez, and Jacquetta Wheeler was the face of L'Oreal Code Breaker Winter 2010 and Spring 2011 campaign.[15]

Ling's younger sister, Ein Tan, is also a model.[2] The sisters appeared together on the covers of Harper's Bazaar Malaysia and Harper's Bazaar Singapore.[2]

In 2014, Ling's appears as special guest in final episode of Asia's Next Top Model Cycle 2.

Ling has signed with ONE.1 MANAGEMENT is a new division of ONE MANAGEMENT in New York, Innovative Artists Talent And Literary Agency in New York, Elite Paris, Elite Toronto, Munich Models and UNO Models in Barcelona. She used to be signed with IMG and Wilhelmina Models in New York.[16][17][18][19]
