Line 17 of the Beijing Subway (Chinese: 北京地铁17线; pinyin: běijīng dìtiě shíqī hàoxiàn), also known by its codename, Line R2 (Chinese: 北京地铁R2线; pinyin: běijīng dìtiě ēr èr hàoxiàn),[1] is a rapid transit rail line under planning in Beijing. Line 17 is planned to run parallel and to the east of Line 5 from the Future Technology City in Changping District to Yizhuang in Daxing District.[2][3] The line is expected to have a total length of 49.7 km (30.9 mi).[3] The northern-most section from Changping to Wangjing West may open in 2015, with the rest of the line to follow by 2020.[3]

History

In January 2011, an official with the city's planning committee indicated that Line 17 of the Subway was planned to run east-west through the city's Central Business District under Guanghua Road with transfers to Lines 4 and 5.[4] In February 2012, the city's planning committee identified a different Line 17, code-named R2, as a line planned for 2020, that would run north-south from Tiantongyuan to Yizhuang that would run parallel and to the east of Line 5.[5] On June 15, 2012, the city government disclosed tentatively planned stations for the R2 Line including:[1][2][6][3]

On October 10, 2013, city authorities confirmed that Line 17 is in fact Line R2 and would run from the Future Technology City in Changping District to Yizhuang in Daxing District.[3] Construction was expected to begin in 2014 and Line 17 would have a total length of 49.7 km (30.9 mi).[3] The northern section of Line 17, with six stations from the Future Technology City to Wangjing West, may open as early as 2015, with the rest of the line to follow in 2020.[3]
