Linda Marion Dessau AM (born 8 May 1953)[1] is a former judge of the Family Court of Australia, serving from 20 June 1995 to 21 June 2013.[2] On 11 February 2015 Premier of Victoria Daniel Andrews announced that she would be appointed the 29th Governor of Victoria, taking office on 1 July 2015.[3]

Dessau was appointed to the AFL Commission in November 2007.[4] A supporter of the Essendon Football Club, Dessau started and was the inaugural chair of the Essendon Women's Network in 1997, which for more than a decade has claimed a strong hold in the grand final week calendar.[5]

She was appointed to the board of the Melbourne Festival, of which she became President in 2014.[6]

Personal life

Dessau was born in Melbourne, and studied law at the University of Melbourne. She is Jewish, and will become only the fourth Jew to serve as a viceregal representative in Australia, after Queensland governor Sir Matthew Nathan and governors-general Sir Isaac Isaacs and Sir Zelman Cowen.[7] She will become the first female Governor of Victoria.

Award

Dessau was recognised for her service to the judiciary, particularly in the area of family law policy and practice, and to the community, when in 2010 she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.[8]
