Melvin Vernell III (July 25, 1992 – June 7, 2012), better known by his stage name, Lil Phat, was an American Hip hop artist.

Biography

Vernell was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He began rapping as a teenager, and was signed to Trill Entertainment in 2007 when he was just 15 years old; he joined the rap group "3 Deep" with two other rappers Mouse & Shell. The same year, he featured as a guest artist on label mate Webbie's single "Independent". In 2011, there was a shooting at one of his drop parties, after which one of his associates was arrested for second-degree murder.[1]

Death

On June 7, 2012, Vernell was shot 5 to 6 times outside of a hospital in Sandy Springs, Georgia as he was awaiting the arrival of his unborn son. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and two suspects were sighted running from the location at the time of the shooting.[3] WBRZ-TV has confirmed that three of four suspects in the shooting of rapper Lil Phat are now in custody, including a reported member of the Russian mafia. .[4]
