The Liga Uruguaya de Básquetbol (also known as LUB) is the most important basketball league from Uruguay. It is organized by the Uruguayan Basketball Federation. The Uruguayan Basketball League began to dispute in 2003. Before that date, the basketball championships were only federal and no competition bring together all the clubs in the country. Until the Liga Uruguaya de Básquetbol was created, the capital clubs were participating in the Uruguayan Federal Tournament, while the clubs of the rest of the country disputed regional tournaments. Moreover, the Uruguayan Federal Tournament was founded in 1915, making it amongst the oldest on the continent.
The first tournament had a dramatic end with a double in the last second that brings the Uruguayan Title to Defensor Sporting, repeated in the 2009-10 season. Where also champions Salto Uruguay in 2004, Trouville in 2005-06, Malvín in 2006-07 and 2010–11, Biguá in 2007-08 and 2008–09, Hebraica Macabi in 2011-12 and Aguada in 2012-13. There are only two teams that participated in all editions, they are: Defensor Sporting and Trouville.
Format
Trophies of the Uruguayan Basketball League
The LUB 2012-13 will be played in three stages: Torneo Clasificatorio (Qualifying Tournament), Súper Liga (Super League) and play-off.
- In the Qualifying Tournament, teams will play in three separate leagues (Capital, Coast and South) according to their origin. In the Capital League the clubs will play two wheels against each other in local and away regime, where the first eight of the table will play the Super League, while the last three fall to the Second Division, to participate in the 2013 Metropolitano tournament. On the other hand both the Coastal League as South Central League play their separate tournaments where the first two qualify for the Super League.
- The Super League will be contested by eight teams of Capital League, two of South League and two of Coast League. They will play divided into two groups of six teams each group, two wheels with home and away regime. Group A will comprise: 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th of Capital League, 1st of South League and 2nd of Coast League. While Group B, which integrated 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th of Capital League, 2nd of South League and 1st of Coast League. Qualify for play-off the four best placed teams from each group, using a system of a double table. The first table will consider only the points earned in the second phase of the Super League and so we will know if the computers inside or not they are in the top four to advance to play-off. The posts made vacant shall be filled by the clubs in Montevideo with best score by adding half of the cattle in the Qualifying Tournament and the total obtained in the Super League. The difference was established because of the internal teams to reach the Super League will only play a maximum of ten games while Montevideo have played about thirty games.
- Finally, teams will play the play-off, being at the best five and the first stage are the quarterfinals. They will cross: A) 1° A vs. 4º B, B) 2° A vs. 3º B, C) 1° B vs. 4º A and D) 2° B vs. 3º A. In semifinal crossings are: A) Winner vs. D) Winner and B) Winner vs. C) Winner. The winners of these matches will play the final each, devoting the winner as champion of LUB 2013-14.
