"Life of the Party" is a song recorded by Canadian singer Shawn Mendes from his extended play The Shawn Mendes EP and debut album Handwritten. Written by Ido Zmishlany and Scott Harris, it was recorded in Toronto, Ontario.

Music video

A lyric video, released on June 30, 2014, is a long, one-shot zoom-in on Shawn Mendes in the George Street diner, who occasionally converses with the waitress of the diner as he is singing. Lyrics from the song appear in spots such as tables and hanging lights. It ends with the waitress reading a note left from Shawn, smiling as the scene fades.[1]

Background

The title of "Life of the Party" appears to convey it as if it were an upbeat dance song, but Mendes, in a Seventeen interview, described the song as not "super happy, but it's also not depressing." The lyrics represent being happy with yourself and figuring out who you are and who you want to be.[2] It was written by two writers from New York, Ido Zmishlany and Scott Harris, though Mendes felt a strong connection it.[3] Mendes told MTV "I first starting writing songs when my dad said, Can you even write your own song?" Till this day Shawn has been writing his own songs with a little bit help from his crew. [4]
