Lieutenant (United States)

The military rank of lieutenant in the United States Army, Air Force and Marine Corps is now divided between:

• first lieutenant, sometimes called simply "lieutenant"
• second lieutenant

During the Civil War, brevet second lieutenants in the Union and Confederate armies were sometimes also known as "third lieutenants".

In the Navy and Coast Guard, the rank of lieutenant is now divided between:

• lieutenant
• lieutenant junior grade
