Lewiston High School is a three-year public secondary school in Lewiston, Idaho, the only traditional high school in the Lewiston School District. Established in 1880 by the territorial legislature, the school district is the state's oldest; it preceded Idaho statehood by ten years.^[1] The school colors of LHS are purple and gold and the mascot is a Bengal.

Athletics

Lewiston competes in IHSAA Class 5A with the largest schools in the state, and its conference is the Inland Empire League (5A) with Coeur d'Alene, Lake City, and Post Falls; all about two hours north in Kootenai County. Lewiston has long-term rivalries with adjacent Clarkston^[3] and also with Moscow,^[4] about 30 miles (50 km) north on the nearby Palouse. The football rivalry with Clarkston started 109 years ago in 1906,^[3] and was formerly played on Thanksgiving.^[5]

The origin and first use of "Bengal" as the mascot is not precisely known, but the local newspaper used it for the LHS basketball team in early 1925.^[6][7]

With a compact campus that opened 87 years ago in 1928,^[1][8] LHS athletics are conducted at various venues in the city.^[9]

Coaches

Coaches with stops at Lewiston High include Steve Belko, Tony Knap, and Bud Riley, all University of Idaho alumni. Dwight Church (1925–94), LHS class of 1943, was a longtime head coach for the Bengals, primarily in baseball, and also led the highly successful American Legion program for 38 summers.^{[35][36][37][38][39]}
