Lehri (2 January 1929 – 13 September 2012), born Safirullah Siddiqui, was a leading comedian and actor in Urdu film industry of Pakistan.

Early life

Safirullah Siddiqui was born in Kanpur, British India.[1] After independence, he migrated to Pakistan and settled in Karachi. With a struggling youth, he performed on radio and stage before setting foot in the film industry.

Works

His film career started in the 1950s and lasted until the 1980s. He won the Nigar Award[2] 11 times for various films between 1964 and 1986. His first film, Anokhi, was released in 1956, and his last production was "Dhanak" in 1986. The vast majority of his films have been in Urdu, though he did perform in a few Punjabi productions.[3]

Death

After his retirement, his health started deteriorating, The then Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto set up a monthly stipend of Rs. 2,500, which he continues to receive, although there has been no increase in the amount.[4]

He died on 13 September 2012 in Karachi, aged 83, in a private hospital.[5][6]
