Lauren Hernandez (born 9 June 2000 in New Brunswick, New Jersey) is an American artistic gymnast.

Gymnastics

2012

Hernandez's Elite career started in 2012 at the Secret U.S Classic, where she placed 11th in the Junior Division, aged 12. Through the Classic, she qualified to the VISA U.S Nationals in St. Louis, Missouri. At nationals, she placed 21st after 2 days competition.

2013

Laurie's first meet of the season was the WOGA Classic where she placed 2nd overall. In June, Hernandez traveled down to the National Training Center in Huntsville, Texas. She competed well and scored a very big 14.900 on floor and finished second behind teammate Ariana Agrapides. She then went to Chicago, Illinois for the Secret Classic and placed 6th. Later in August, at the P&G Gymnastics Championships, Hernandez placed 6th on vault, 2nd on bars, tied 3rd on beam with Alexis Vasquez and 2nd on the floor. She also took another silver in the all-around with a 116.650 total. In September, she went to Yokohama for an International Junior competition scoring 56.750 and taking home a bronze with teammate Bailie Key winning the title.

2014

In early 2014, Hernandez suffered a hand fracture when she slipped off beam in a training session.

Laurie returned to competition soon after her hand fracture but then suffered a torn patella tendon and dislocated kneecap, resulting in 6 months out of Gymnastics, ending chances of competition at Nationals.[1]

Hernandez resumed training in the fall and attended the final U.S. training camp of the year in November.[2]

2015

Hernandez was named to the U.S. team for the 2015 City of Jesolo Trophy. She represented the U.S. at the competition and was crowned Junior AA Champion, scoring 57.650, placing ahead of team mates Norah Flatley and Jazmyn Foberg.[3] In the junior division event finals, Hernandez earned additional gold medals on the uneven bars with a score of 14.500 and the floor exercise with a score of 14.650.[4]

Personal life

Hernandez is daughter to Wanda and Anthony and has a sister, Jelysa and a brother, Marcus who both do Karate and Varsity Track. At the age 5, Laurie asked her mom if she could do Gymnastics and has never looked back since. Outside of Gymnastics, she loves to do Swimming as well as her nails, writing poetry and drawing and loves listening to One Direction and Ed Sheeran. Although she has a tight schedule, she occasionally volunteers at the Sayre Woods Bible Church.

Future

2016 will be the year that Hernandez will turn senior and her main goal is the 2016 Olympic Games. She, along with her teammate Jazmyn Foberg, committed to the University of Florida on December 8, 2014 and will attend in the fall of 2018.
