Laurel (literary): refers to pride, hubris. In Grecian times, people who were famous often wore laurel crowns (crowns made from the plants) to denote their fame. Thus the phrase "don't rest on your laurels" which cautions the subject to always work hard rather than be overconfident or feel too comfortable because of their accomplishments
