Laolong Town[1] (Simplified Chinese characters: 老隆镇)is located in the northwestern part of Longchuan County in China, which is situated in northwestern Guangdong Province. Around 120,000 people live in Laolong town,[2] which is the economic,[3]political and transportation hub of Longchuan County. The town covers over 15 square kilometers. Laolong is surrounded on three sides by mountains and faces the East River in the west.

History

In ancient China, Laolong was said to be a trading and market town. It's said that Laolong was a fort of Longchuan county that Zhao Tuo defended tenaciously during the Qing dynasty.

The name of the town had been changed from Laolong to Laolong (the pronunciation is the same, but the Chinese characters are different).[1]

The government of Longchuan County had been based in Laolong town for 65 years.

Language and Culture

The most widespread dialect in Laolong is a regional variation of Hakka the Hakka language. Historically, the Shan'ge (also called Hakka hill song) were popular in Laolong and older men and women would walk along the river singing in the mornings. The Shan'ge are often sung in duet with improvised lyrics.

Economy

Laolong's economy has developed rapidly in recent years. In 2004, the GDP of Laolong was about RMB 6.13 billion. This includes a total industrial output value of about 3.33 billion, the total value of agricultural output of about RMB751 million and the total value of tertiary industry was about RMB 2.73 billion. Fiscal revenue is about RMB 461 million, while the rural per capita net income (PCNIRH) being about 5586 yuan.[3][2]

Transportation

As Laolong is the center of Longchuan County, the transportation system is more extensive compared to other towns in the area. Major roads include the China National Highway 205 (G205) and Guangdong Provincial Highway 120 (S120). The Beijing–Kowloon, Guangzhou–Meizhou–Shantou and Zhangping–Longchuan railways intersect in Longchuan, making it an important railway hub for the Lingnan region.

Railway

There are three rail stations in Laolong. Three public transit bus routes operate in Laolong at a fare of 1 RMB per trip. There are few buses with stops in Laolong that operate outside Longchuan County.
