Langara College is a public degree-granting college in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada which serves approximately 21,000 students annually through its university, career, and continuing studies programs. In 1970, Vancouver City College opened its West 49th Avenue campus. On April 1, 1994, Langara College was established as an independent public college under the Provincial College and Institute Act. The college takes its name from the neighbourhood in which it is situated, which was named after Spanish Admiral Juan de Lángara.

Programs and courses at Langara College are delivered in the following subject areas:[3]

University Studies

Langara College provides university-level grams and courses and offers a variety of qualifications, including baccalaureate degrees, associate degrees, diplomas, certificates, and citations. The three 4-year degree programs offered by the College are Nursing,[4] Recreation Management,[5] and Business Administration.[6] Langara's wide range of academic programs in more than 60 subject areas are offered over three semesters per year. Langara is a popular choice for university transfer students due to smaller class sizes, excellent support services, and competitive tuition fees. More students transfer to BC universities from Langara College than from any other college in the province.

Career Studies

Langara College offers career programs leading to one-year certificates, two-year diplomas, and four-year bachelor's degrees in fields that lead to careers in business, industry, community services, and the arts. Although some of Langara's career programs require that students complete the program within a specific time period, many of the programs can be completed on a part-time basis.

Continuing Studies

Langara College's Continuing Studies department offers over 700 courses and 35 certificate programs year-round. The department's strategic objective is to provide lifelong learning opportunities to meet the individual needs of students.

International Education

Langara welcomes over 1,200 international students to Vancouver from over 30 countries.

School of Management

With over 50 part-time and full-time industry instructors, the LSM offers an education centered around proven practices from companies all over the world. There are four bachelor degree options offered through the program – Accounting, Business Management, Marketing, and International Business – as well as diplomas in Accounting, Financial Management, Business Management, and Marketing. The School of Management is currently led by Department Chair Spencer Dane.

Although the Langara School of Management is not officially ranked by any organizations, it was recently ranked in business competitions as one of the top business schools in Canada. Through its competition program and the Langara Competition Club, it placed in the top five in the 2012 Royal Roads University International Undergraduate Case Competition, beating out top schools such as Richard Ivey School of Business. Other competitions where it received high rankings include the 2012 Vanier College BDC Case Competition (Top 6), the 2012 Canadian Western International Business Competition (Junior 1st place, Senior 4th place), and the 2011 BC Business Simulation Competition (2nd place).

School of Nursing

Langara School of Nursing has been named “School of the Year” in 2013 at the Canadian Nursing Students’ Association (CNSA) national conference. Langara was chosen in recognition of their contribution to the CNSA by hosting the largest CNSA Western/Prairie Regional in history within 10 months of joining the association.

On February 27, 2014, Langara School of Nursing was recognized with a glowing review by the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC). According to Langara's website, "A full review of Langara’s Bachelor of Science of Nursing Program was conducted by the CRNBC’s Education Program Review Committee in December, 2013, as part of the organization’s regular vetting schedule of the province’s nursing programs. The review was so successful that the program was awarded recognition for the next seven years – the longest period offered by the CRNBC, and a distinction reserved for exceptional programs."

Studio 58

Studio 58, Langara College's School of Theatre Arts offers professional theatre training for actors and production personnel. The program ranked within the Top five theatre schools in Canada in 2006. The school auditions hundreds of people across Canada but only sixteen students are accepted per semester. The school has around 72 students for both its three-year acting program, and two-year production program. The School of Theatre Arts is currently led by Artistic Director Kathryn Shaw.

Film Arts

Film Arts is an eight-month intensive, collaborative and comprehensive program for students wishing to work in film as actors, writers, or directors. The development and inspiration for the Film Arts Program grew out of Langara's Theatre Arts/Studio 58 Program and its successful conservatory approach to training actors and production personnel in theatre. The Film Arts Program offers three streams of study: Writing Acting Directing Students collaborate on projects and engage in intensive study in their own craft area. Courses in film studies, industry practices, the principles and business of film production, and career preparation will give students in all streams the knowledge to embark on creative film careers. Instructors are working professionals who bring their expertise and experience into the classroom. The Film Arts Program is for dedicated students committed to imaginative exploration and to honing and upgrading their skills and knowledge in film. Athletics

Langara's intercollegiate athletic program is one of the top college athletic programs in Canada. Langara is a member of the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST), formerly known as the British Columbia Colleges' Athletic Association (BCCAA), and the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA). In 1999, Langara College was the runner-up for the Overall CCAA Sport Supremacy Award for athletic achievements between the years of 1974 and 1999.

Student Governance

The Langara's Students' Union (LSU) is an independent student union. The offices of the LSU are located in the Student Union Building (built in 2009). The LSU is a separate entity from the college. It is the collective voice of over 9000 students at Langara College. Incorporated in 1969, the Union is a democratically run organization that represents and advocates for its membership at the college level and in the wider community, including the provincial and federal government.

Student Media

Student Media at Langara is served by The Voice, operated by the College's Journalism Program. The Voice is a member of Canadian University Press. The Langara community is also covered in the online newsblog Langara Published, an independent, student-run news source for the campus.

Alumni

The Langara Alumni Association is an independent body whose mission is to promote and enhance the relationship between Langara College and its alumni. The Association is committed to providing services, activities, and programs that encourage the involvement and participation of alumni. It is overseen by a Board of Directors composed of alumni who work closely with the school to create opportunities for professional development, networking, and social events, as well as the promotion of ongoing relationships between past students and the institution. Langara's alumni number more than 70,000.
