Lalin [ˈlalʲin] (Ukrainian: Лялин, Ялин, Lialyn) is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Sanok, within Sanok County, Subcarpathian Voivodeship, in south-eastern Poland.[1] It lies approximately 13 kilometres (8 mi) north-west of Sanok and 45 km (28 mi) south of the regional capital Rzeszów.
The village has a population of 300.
History
Village in the Middle Ages was divided into two towns - Lalin Ruthenian and Lalin German. Located approximately 13 kilometers from Sanok and 45 kilometers from Rzeszów. The village is located in the Lemko region, where for centuries resided ethnographic group of Ukrainian highlanders that until 1947 was living on both sides of the Carpathian Mountains and frontiers.
Among the various ethnic groups of the Ukrainian ethnos (Boikos, Hutsuls, Podolian Volhynians, et al.) especially is best preserved their ethnographic groups mountain dwellers Ukrainian Carpathians - Boikos, Hutsuls and Lemkos.
Period after World War 2
In 1946, after the relocation of the indigenous Ukrainian population in western Poland (Polish: Ziemie Odzyskane) and Ukraine ("Operation Wisla"), have settled in the village of the Poles.
Lemkos were forbidden to identify themselves as Lemkos, to read Lemko literature, to practice their Lemko traditions, to wear anything that might identify them as Lemko. Getting caught doing so meant punishment or even death.
