Lakhai (Bengali: লাখাই) is an Upazila of Habiganj District in the Division of Sylhet, Bangladesh.[1]
Geography
Lakhai is located at 24°17′20″N 91°13′00″E / 24.2889°N 91.2167°E. It has 19465 units of house hold and total area 196.56 km². Lakhai is the connecting point of 3 administrative divisions Sylhet, Dhaka & Chittagong of Bangladesh. It is surrounded by Habiganj Sadar Upazila, Baniachang Upazila, Madhabpur Upazila of Habiganj, Nasirnagar Upazila of Brahmanbaria and Astagram Upazila of Kishoreganj where Lakhai Upazila is the centre Point. Main rivers- Meghna, Sutang, Monikhai, Balabhadra etc. rivers
Demographics
At the 1991 Bangladesh census, Lakhai had a population of 110,319, of whom 53,164 were aged 18 or older. Males constituted 49.24% of the population, and females 50.76%. Lakhai had an average literacy rate of 21.6% (7+ years), against the national average of 32.4%.[2]
Administrative
Lakhai has 6 Unions Parishad, 70 Mouzas and 63 villages is administered by an Upazila Nirbahi Officer.
Economy
Lakhai consists of both plain lands & Haor areas, not only self-sufficient in food and fish but also exports, is famous for paddy, jute & winter corps.
Communication
Lakhai is connected through Habiganj, Ashuganj, Fandauk, Chatiain by road; Bhairab by launch and Shayestaganj, Shahjibazar, Nayapara by rail communications. Regional highway runs through Sarail, Nasirnagar, Lakhai, Habiganj route is important for road communications in this region. Lakhai-Dhaka and Lakhai-Sylhet direct bus services are available.
Lakhai was river based upazila in the past.But now=a=days it has developed immediately.
Educational and culture
At the 2001 census the average literacy rate of Lakhai Upazila was 28.7% (7+ years),[3] where national average is 46.2%. In Dhaka several thousands people of Lakhai reside where most of vangariwala, restaurants, Bakarkhani shops, newspaper stores, feriwala are from Lakhai. Movements for establishing Sylhet Division were also organized by people of Lakhai as they are in large number in Dhaka.
Lakhai is famous for pithas and hospitality, rich with cross cultures of greater Sylhet, Dhaka & Chittagong's flavour & foreign connections, it is unique of Bangladesh.

Eminent personalities
- M Mukhlesur Rahman Chowdhury,[5] former advisor to the President of Bangladesh, first minister of Habiganj-Lakhai area,[6] past press secretary to the President of Bangladesh and ex-president of Overseas Correspondents' Association- OCAB.[7]
- Sheikh Bhanu: One of the most renowned mystic poets of Bangladesh. He is famous for the spiritual song "Nishite Jaiyo Fulo Bone". He was born in Bhadikara under Lakhai Upazila.
