Lakeside High School is a public high school in unincorporated DeKalb County, Georgia. The school has an Atlanta address (3801 Briarcliff Road). The school is a part of the DeKalb County School System. Mr. Jason Clyne, Lakeside's former Assistant Principal for Instruction, has been named as Lakeside's new principal for the 2013-2014 school year.

Lakeside is a public school encompassing grades 9-12. The school is located in a predominately upper middle class suburban community and serves students who reside primarily in the Northlake area of the DeKalb County School District. Rigorous instruction, high student achievement, parental involvement and teacher retention are strengths for Lakeside High School.

Lakeside High School opened its doors in 1964. Lakeside completed a $23 million renovation and addition in the summer of 2012, adding a new classroom wing and a performing arts building.

In the Newsweek Magazine (May 16, 2005) listing of the best 1,200 public high schools in the nation, Lakeside ranked at 107, the highest in Georgia. In the May 23, 2006 edition of the list, which is based on the number of AP and IB tests taken as compared to the number of graduating seniors, Lakeside ranked 135, just below Riverwood High School in nearby Sandy Springs, which ranked 132.

Demographics

The student body is composed of 46% White, 32% Black, 7.4% Asian, and 14% other racial groups; in addition, 22% of students classify themselves as Hispanic. These numbers include 9.2% Students with Disabilities, 36% Economically Disadvantaged, and 5.5% English Language Learners.[1]

Henderson Middle School is Lakeside's feeder middle school. A small minority of the students come from private schools or DeKalb School of the Arts (DSA).

Staff

The school has a professional staff of 170, including 120 teaching faculty, five administrators, and five counselors.

Curriculum

In addition to a varied range of extracurricular activities, a curriculum is offered from a standardized system wide program of studies. (per CSIP 2012-2013) A high percentage of students enroll and successfully complete advanced and gifted classes. Twenty-two Advanced Placement courses are offered in: English Lit, Composition, Calculus AB and BC, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Physics, Microeconomics, World History, Psychology, American History, American Government, Computer Science, French Language, German Language, Spanish Language, Music Theory, Studio Art Drawing, 2- D and 3-D, and Art History. In addition, advanced or accelerated courses and courses for the gifted are offered in English, math, science, French, Spanish and social science. Lakeside administered 1164 AP exams during the 2011-2012 school year.[2]

In the Fall of 1997, DeKalb County Schools changed to a semester system. A minimum of 24 Carnegie Units must be completed in order to qualify for graduation. Lakeside is on a traditional seven period class day. Each class period is 50 minutes in length with 180 instructional days in the school year.

Local colleges and universities coordinate Joint Enrollment programs with Lakeside to serve students who wish to pursue college courses while still in high school.

Sports and extracurricular activities

Lakeside High School competes in GHSA Region 2-AAAAAA, along with Tucker High School from DeKalb County, Alcovy High School and Newton High School from Newton County, Lovejoy High School from Clayton County, and Rockdale County High School.

Cross country

The Lakeside Vikings have established a strong tradition in cross country by winning 5 state team championships. In 2000, both Joe Thorne and Rebecca Mullen won individual AAAAA State titles under the direction of Coach Eddie Roberts. Thorne won State again in 2001, and went on to become a two-time NCAA All American for the Texas Longhorns. At the end of the 2004 season, Coach Roberts retired as head coach after 30+ years at the helm. He continues to assist with the varsity teams. Coach Rick Barbe took over as head coach in 2005 with Chrys Randolph as his assistant. In 2007, Coach Ansley Smith became the new assistant coach.

After graduating several elite runners, 2007 was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the team. However, a strong freshman class stepped up to help make it another successful year. At the DeKalb County Championships, senior Joe Stowe won the bronze medal followed by freshman John Ewing in 4th to lead the boys' varsity team to their 13th consecutive title. The varsity girls placed second to Southwest DeKalb. At the Region 6-AAAA Championships, Lakeside boys placed second and the girls placed fourth to advance to the State meet in Carrollton. At State, John Ewing and senior Adam Haviland paced the boys to a 5th place finish with an average team time of 9:36 - their best since 2001. Despite a number of setbacks due to injury and illness, the girls placed a respectable 8th place and managed to beat rival Southwest DeKalb. In 2008, the boys team anticipated another successful season with returning runners Charlie Clark, David Dixon, John Ewing, and Pete Kostopoulos. After winning overwhelmingly at the DeKalb County race and placing second at region, the boys finished the season at state in third place. The girls team once again were unexpectedly successful, reclaiming the county title and overcoming all odds to place third in state, with a team led by 2008 state champion freshman Meghan Wetterhall. Track and Field

In 2010 Carla LaRotta beat the Lakeside school record in Pole Vaulting. Her height was 9'6". Spring 2011, she beat the Dekalb County record with 9'3" pole vault.

The 2011 Lakeside Track and Field Team was filled with many champions winning trophies and first, second and third place metals. They included Carla Larotta, John Ewing, Brent Reynolds, Meghan Wetterhall, Hayley Kealey, Kyle Grant, Leah Chishom and Jenn Cora.

Football

From 1965-1997, the Lakeside Vikings consistently ranked among the best football teams in Georgia. During that thirty-two year period, Lakeside never experienced a losing season. No other team in Georgia could make that claim. The Vikings won state championships in 1970,1972, and 1991 and were state runner-up in 1974 and 1996. Lakeside won Region titles in 1967, 1970, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1978, 1981, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, and 1991. From 1970-1997 under head coaches Wayman Creel and Phil Lindsey and defensive coordinator Dave Redford, Lakeside compiled a 259-72-4 record.

Newspaper

The Lakeside Legend was voted "Superior" by GSPA. Newspaper is offered as a fourth period class.

Swimming and diving

The boys have currently won eight consecutive county championships, and have posted undefeated duel meet records for the last 5 seasons, including a huge upset of Marist High School at the 2005 Region 6-AAAA championships. The girls currently have fourteen consecutive DeKalb county championships while the boys currently have seven consecutive Dekalb county championships. In the 2009 season, the men captured the title once again edging out Dunwoody by one point .In the 2010 season however, both boys and girls dismantled the county; boys winning by over 60 points (Boys: LHS-247, 2nd place Dunwoody-181 |Girls: LHS-245 Dunwoody: 219). Also, the boys and girls have fared very well at state every year.

Baseball

The Varsity Baseball team has been coached by Bill Newsome since 2004. During that time, Lakeside has advanced to the state playoffs nine times. Coach Newsome became the winningest baseball coach in school history during the 2013-2014 season, notching his 177th win. [4]

Lakeside captured the Georgia Dugout Tournament Championship in 2006, and the team won its tournament pool in 1983, 2002, and 2003.

Lakeside has 28 players from the last 10 graduating classes who went on to play college or professional baseball, including 5 seniors from the 2010 Vikings squad.[6]

Band

Lakeside band is conducted by David Fairchild. The band has performed and won awards in competitions in Chicago, Washington D.C., Myrtle Beach, Orlando, and Hawaii. The Marching Band routinely competes in marching competitions. The band also contains an active jazz band, winter drum line, color guard, and winter guard, which competes in the Southern Association of Performance Arts (SAPA) and won first place in class SrA (2011), and second place in IrA (2012). The band sends four separate groups to the Georgia District IV Large Group Performance Evaluations each year, and currently has the highest number of students from the county in the All-State Band (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) and the most students in the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony from any one school (2010, 2011, 2014), in addition to having the largest band enrollment in DeKalb County School District. The Jazz Band hosts an annual swing dance, presented by the Atlanta Swing Era Dance Association (ASEDA) with a swing dance lessons taught by Down South Swing.
