Lajeado is an important city in Brazil's Taquari Valley, with about 80 thousand inhabitants. Some of the largest distributors of food and fuel of the state (Rio Grande do Sul) are found in Lajeado.

Founded in 1891, the city is mostly urban, with little expression in the rural area, its current mayor is the Mrs. Carmen Regina Cardoso.

Lajeado belonged to municipality of Estrela until its emancipation, was colonized by German and Italian people, and has on its part, the blacks, descendants of slaves.

The city has a university: Univates.
