Laine Kallas (née Laine Erik; born 21 April 1942 in Särevere Parish, Järva County) is an Estonian agricultural scientist and a retired middle distance runner representing the Soviet Union.

Sports career

Erik specialized on the 800 metre distance. She finished 6th at the Olympic Games in 1964 (Tokyo), and in 1968 (Mexico City) she finished fifth in her semifinal.^[1] In the years 1964, 1967 and 1968, she became the champion of the Soviet Union. In 1965 she received the gold medal at the Summer Universiade in Budapest. In 1964, she was part of the 3 × 800 metre Soviet women's team that set the world record.^[2]

She set her personal best in the women's 800 metres (2:03.6) on 4 September 1967 at a meeting in Kiev.^[3]

She became Estonian champion 26 times and set the Estonian record 22 times.

Scientist career

Kallas graduated from the Estonian Agricultural Academy's Zootechnics Faculty in 1969, and since 1984 she is the candidate of the agricultural sciences. Between 1969 and 1996 she workes as a researcher at the Institute of Animal Science of Estonian Agricultural University,^[2] and after that as a company manager.
