Vice Admiral Lachlan Donald Ian MacKinnon CB, CVO (2 December 1882 - 11 October 1948) was a Royal Navy officer who became Commander of the 2nd Battle Squadron.
Naval career
MacKinnon joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in 1898 and, after service in the Boxer Rebellion, took part in World War I, seeing action at the bombardment of the Dardanelles forts in 1914, the Battle of Dogger Bank in 1915 and the Battle of Jutland in 1916.[1] He became commanding officer of the repair ship HMS Assistance in 1924 and of the cruiser HMS Danae in 1926.[1] He went on to be Captain of the Fleet for the Mediterranean Fleet in 1930, commanding officer of the battleship HMS Warspite in 1932 and Chief of Staff to the Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth in 1933.[1] After that he became Commander of the 2nd Battle Squadron in 1937 before retiring in 1939.[1] He served in charge of convoys during World War II.[1]
Family
MacKinnon married Imogen Lorna Sayers Lee; they had two sons and two daughters.[2]
