LG Household & Health Care, Limited is a major South Korean personal care and cosmetics producer and currently, the second largest cosmetic firm in the country.
History
LG Group today is known as an electronic manufacturer, and its tagline Life’s Good (LG) but it started out as Lak-Hui or Lucky Chemical Industrial Corp. (now LG Chemical) and Gold Star (currently LG Electronics).
Founded in 1947, LG Corp’s founder Koo In-Hwoi established Lucky Chemical Industrial Corp. The first product Lucky Chemical Industrial produced in 1947 was Lucky Cream. It came in a brown container bearing the image of the Hollywood starlet Deanna Durbin and boasted such a sophisticated design that many people mistakenly thought it was imported from Shanghai.
In 1951, the company entered the plastics business to make cosmetics containers and succeeded in developing less brittle kind of lid for them. The company ushered in the plastic age in Korea, introducing plastic combs, soap cases, toothbrushes and tableware. In 1954, it made Korea’s first toothpaste brand, Lucky Toothpaste, and three years later, in 1957, it beat the U.S. brand Colgate to top the market in Korea.[2] By the 1960s, the company had already produced toothpastes, soaps, and detergents and in 1983, their first cosmetic line DEBON was released.
In 1995, LG Cosmetics established a joint venture company in China and changed its name to LG Chemical Ltd.[3]
Products
Household Goods
The household goods business consists of oral care products, skin care products, hair care products, laundry products, home care products, and paper products, etc., and they together are contributing to create more comfortable and healthier living. The household goods business started in 1954 with the production of toothpaste products. With the combination of latest technology and Asian tradition, LG Household & Health Care developed bamboo salt toothpaste in 1990's, and also acquired the nation's very first JIS mark for synthesis detergent and has been acknowledged for leading technology.
Notable products include the ‘Elastine Ihee’ shampoo and ‘Bamboo Salt Tiger Herb’ toothpaste. The eco-friendly and convenient ‘Saffron 10X’ fabric softener and the ‘Who pooped on my toothbrush’ toothpaste, products with differentiated concepts, were also introduced.[4]
Cosmetics
With the DeBON brand, the cosmetics business started in 1994, and from then it has grown rapidly showing 40% of growth every year. Now, it has raised itself to be nation's leading cosmetics manufacturer. Especially in 1993, LG Household & Health Care was recognized as the nation's first CGMP qualified business. From then on, LG cosmetics grown to be an international brand, and has produced superior quality cosmetics. In addition, through the establishment and successful operation of Beauty Center and CS center, LG Household & Health Care was selected as the number one consumer satisfaction company.[5]
Brands under LG Household & Health Care include The History Of Whoo (an oriental medicine brand), Su:m37 (fermentation brand),OHUI (western style skincare brand that focuses on high tech ingredients such as stem cells), Belif (based on UK Herbalist Duncan Napier; natural skincare),Beyond (LG’s naturalism line), MULE (LG’s collaboration with Korean makeup artist, Jung Saem Mool), Ĭsa Knox, Sooryehan,Mirepa & Vonin (LG’s men skincare brand), The Face Shop, Lacvert, Carezone, Cathycat, VoV, Re-en (LG’s oriental medicine based hair care).[6]
Beverages
The company joined with Coca-Cola Beverage in 2008, Diamond Water in 2009 and Haital Beverage in 2011.
