Background

The group released their debut mixtape Lords Never Worry on August 28, 2012.[1] The year 2013 saw the release of Long. Live. ASAP and Trap Lord, the respective debut studio albums by ASAP Mob members ASAP Rocky and ASAP Ferg.[2] On August 26, 2013, ASAP Yams announced that the group's untitled debut studio album, would be released on October 15, 2013.[3][4][5] ASAP Rocky would later reveal a title of Lord$ for it, but the date would be pushed back without comment by the group.[2][6]

ASAP Ferg explained the push back in November 2013 saying, "We're working on perfection. We don't want to rush it this time around. With the mixtape, we kind of had supply and demand but now we have to regroup and come out with a dope project." He also detailed the project's development and sound saying, we "already laid down scads of tracks that are honing in on a throwback vibe. We have a lot of songs but the matter is picking the right songs. We're going for the early and late Nineties sound with a twist." He also confirmed that ASAP Ty Beats and other frequent collaborators would be the album's producers.[2]

Following the release of the album's first single in December 2013, it was reported that the album would now be titled L.O.R.D..[7][8] Within the following days, a release date of March 4, 2014, was set for the album.[9] In December 2013, Ferg told Exclaim!, "We're just out to make history. We don't want to put out quantity over quality, know what I'm saying? We have to put out some dope shit because that's what we're here to do at the end of the day."[8] Speaking to HipHopDX in April 2014, ASAP Nast said, "We just basically wanted to give people an official album and give people real work. So what we did was take our time with this album really give people bangers, and really give the fans what they deserve from us. That's the reason why the dates have been pushed back and everyone's wondering what's up with the album."[10]

Release and promotion

On October 15, 2013, ASAP Ferg, ASAP Twelvyy, ASAP Nast, ASAP Ant, and ASAP Rocky participated in the ASAP Mob cypher, during the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards.[11] On December 4, 2013, the album's first single "Trillmatic" by ASAP Nast featuring Method Man, and produced by ASAP Ty Beats, was released.[7][12] That same day, the song's music video, which was shot in New York City, was released.[13] On January 14, 2014, the music video was released for the ASAP Ant track "See Me".[14] ASAP Mob performed at SXSW on March 15 and March 16, 2014. The second day, ASAP Ant, Twelvyy and Nast performed new material from the album.[15]

On April 3, 2014, in an interview with HipHopDX, ASAP Nast spoke about the album's delay, saying: "It's coming soon. We just basically wanted to give people an official album and give people real work. So what we did was take our time with this album really give people bangers, and really give the fans what they deserve from us. That's the reason why the dates have been pushed back and everyone's wondering what's up with the album. The album is coming soon. I'm not gonna give you a date, but you gotta wait for greatness, and that's just the way life is."[10]

On April 22, 2014, ASAP Mob released the album's second single, a song by ASAP Twelvyy titled "Xscape".[16][17] The song's music video was released the following day.[18] The album's third single, "Hella Hoes" featuring ASAP Rocky, Ferg, Nast and Twelvy was released on June 6, 2014.[19]

On September 26, 2014, ASAP Yams announced on his personal Tumblr that the album was officially scrapped and that most of the tracks, originally intended to be on L.O.R.D. , would likely appear on future solo albums from several ASAP Mob members.[20]
