L.A. Crime is an upcoming American true crime procedural drama television pilot, written by Steven Baigelman, and executive produced by Baigelman, Todd Lieberman, David Hoberman and Laurie Zaks. It was commissioned by the ABC network in early 2015 and will star Adam Rothenberg, Gabriel Luna, Ed Westwick, Erika Christensen, Taissa Farmiga, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Holley Fain, Anne Winters, Karolina Wydra and David Sullivan in main roles.[1]

The potential first season, subtitled The Sunset Strip, focuses on two Los Angeles Police Department detectives as they search for Bonnie and Clyde–esque serial killers terrorizing the Sunset Strip, amid the rock and roll, coke-infused revelry of the 1980s. Filming for the pilot began in Los Angeles, California on March 16, 2015 and wrapped on April 2, 2015.

On April 24, 2015 it was announced the pilot was in talks to get ordered to series.[2]

Plot

In the murder capital of the United States – 1982 Los Angeles – Detective Jack Roth (Rothenberg) is experiencing déjà vu; taking on the case of a young girl's murder, Jack sees similarities that match with killers he's chased before. Now forced to team up with Paco Contreras (Luna), the man responsible for his old partner's demise, Jack must reconcile with the past to get a jump on the Sunset Strip Killer. Meanwhile, the sadistic smooth-talker Kent Galloway (Westwick) devises new ways to kill in order to gain the recognition he craves.[3]

Development

It was first reported in September 2014 that the American Broadcasting Company network was developing a true crime anthology series titled L.A. Crime, written by Steven Baigelman, produced by Robert D. Simon, and executive produced by Baigelman, Todd Lieberman, David Hoberman and Laurie Zaks of Mandeville Films.[13] The project was described as "a character-driven, true crime procedural that explores sex, politics and popular culture across various noteworthy eras in L.A. history."[14] On January 23, 2015, it was announced that ABC had given the project a pilot order.[15] The hour-long pilot was directed by Tom Shankland.[16]

Casting

On February 24, 2015, Erika Christensen was the first to be cast in the role of Betty Smith, described as a nurse and mother who meets a strange man and becomes one half of a killing team that terrorizes the Sunset Strip.[7] Taissa Farmiga and Darrell Britt-Gibson were cast the following day as Karen McClaren, a Berkeley graduate and aspiring journalist who hopes to work for Rolling Stone, and Diver Hawkes, an owner of a paparazzi company specializing in crime, who gives Karen a job.[9] On March 3, 2015, Karolina Wydra joined the cast as Dianne Gibbons, a beautiful and resilient detective who is working undercover as a barmaid on the strip.[11] On March 4, 2015, it was announced that Adam Rothenberg had been cast in the leading role of Detective Jack Roth, a police officer leading the search for the killing duo, and Holley Fain had been cast as Detective Roth's loving and protective wife Trish.[4] On March 11, 2015, Anne Winters joined the cast as Vicki Roth, the teenaged daughter of Jack and Trish Roth.[10] That same day, it was announced that Gabriel Luna had been cast in the role of Detective Paco Contreras, Jack's newly transferred partner who struggles to fit in with the unit, since he was responsible for the demise of Jack's old partner.[5] On March 12, 2015, Ed Westwick was cast as Kent Galloway, the Sunset Strip Killer.[6] On March 20, 2015, David Sullivan joined the cast as Detective Arnold "Arnie" Bukowski, a crass, loudmouth detective in charge of heading up the ongoing investigation of the Sunset Strip Killer, alongside Jack and Paco.[12]

Filming

Principal photography for the pilot episode began on March 16, 2015 in Los Angeles, California.[17][18] Filming took place at the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner building located in Downtown Los Angeles,[19] on Ventura Boulevard in the San Fernando Valley, and on the Sunset Strip.[20] Production on the pilot was completed on April 2, 2015.
