Kumkumapoovu was a popular Malayalam soap opera that appeared on Asianet. It comprised 785 episodes. The first episode aired on January 31, 2011 and ended on February 1, 2014. The drama received several nominations at the 2012 and 2013 Asianet Television Awards.

plot

Kumkumapoovu tells the story of Professor Jayanthi and her illegitimate daughter Shalini. Jayanthi bore Shalini during her college days. Jayanthi's father told her that her daughter was stillborn and convinced her to marry another man, with whom she has a daughter and a son and leads a happy life.

Shalini is sold to Markose, a cruel butcher. A subplot involves a mysterious accountant known as Shastri who speaks with the Professor frequently. A lady named Subadramma takes Shalini from Markose and raises her as her daughter with her son Mahesh.

The scheme unravels when Mahesh marries Professor Jayanthi's selfish daughter Amala. Amala hates Shalini as she is loved by everyone around her. She invents stories about an affair between Shalini and Mahesh and does all she can to assault Shalini.

Meanwhile Jayanthi realizes that Shalini is her daughter, while Shalini remains oblivious. Shalini marries Rudran and they lead a good life, but Amala keeps troubling them. Shalini's father and Jayanthi's ex-lover, Jithan who is a famous novelist, comes back. He meets Shalini and they recognize their relationship. The story revolves around the feelings, emotions and confusions that Jayanthi has to face with the love for her Shalini and her family. Finally Rudran , Jayanthi and Jithan dies to end the serial which leaves Shalini all alone again.[1]
