She then went on the become one of the top actresses in the Kannada film industry.
Early life
Kriti Kharbanda was born in New Delhi[2] into a Punjabi family.[3] She moved to Bengaluru in the early 90s with her family. After completing her high school education in Baldwin Girls High School, she attended Bishop Cotton Women's Christian College before graduating from Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College.[2] She holds a diploma in jewel designing.[4]
As a child, she was featured in a number of advertisements and she continued modelling while in college.[3] Her prominent modelling campaigns during her college days were for Bhima Jewellers, Spar and Fair and Lovely. Her photo on the Spar billboard caught the attention of a Telugu film crew and that paved the way for her acting career.[2] She has said that she had initially no plans of becoming an actress and that it was only because of the encouragement of her mother that she considered acting in films seriously.[3]
Career
Her debut Telugu film Boni was unsuccessful at the box office.[2] However Kriti received a generally positive response from both critics and audiences.[5][6] Subsequently she landed a prominent role in the Pawan Kalyan film Teen Maar, which was an average grosser. Around the same time, she made her debut in Kannada with the film Chiru. Her performance was well received and the film was a moderate hit at the box office.[7]
In 2011, she was also seen in a guest role in the successful Telugu romantic comedy Ala Modalaindi,.[5] Her career in Telugu cinema continued with the film Mr. Nookayya where she was cast alongside Manoj Manchu. Meanwhile in Kannada, she starred in the hit Prem Adda, a remake of the Tamil film Subramaniapuram.[8] She had four releases in 2013, two each in Telugu and Kannada. Her Kannada film Gallate was an average grosser, but her Telugu films, Bhaskar's Ongole Githa and Kalyan Ram's Om 3D were box office failures.
Her career however saw a huge upswing with the Kannada romantic comedy Googly. Her portrayal of a medical student was lauded by critics.[9][10] Sify, in particular, praised Kriti, calling her "The heart and soul of the movie".[11] The film went on to collect more than 15 crores at the box office, emerging as one of the highest grossing Kannada films of 2013.[12][13] Kriti's rise in popularity resulted in her being voted Bengaluru Times most desirable woman of 2013.[14]
Following Googly's success, she became a much sought after actress in Kannada cinema.[15] As of June 2014, she signed over half-a-dozen Kannada film. Her subsequent Kannada releases, Superro Ranga starring Upendra, Belli, in which she is paired with Shivarajkumar, and Thirupathi Express, a remake of the Telugu film Venkatadri Express all fetched a generally positive response.[16] Her upcoming Kannada releases areMinchagi Neenu Baralu opposite Diganth [17] and Dalapathy starring Nenapirali Prem [18] She is also playing female lead in the Kannada films, film Sanju Weds Geetha 2, and Paapu. Currently, Kriti is also making a return to Telugu cinema after a long gap in the yet to be titled Ram Charan, Srinu Vaitla film that's due to go on floors in April 2015.
