Krishan Kumar Modi (K.K. Modi), (born 27 August 1940), is an Indian entrepreneur who is the President of Modi Enterprises, which has interests in diversified business sectors in India. Modi is the son of late Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi, who founded the Modi Group in 1933 by venturing into various industrial sectors in the pre and post independence era.[1] He is married to Bina Modi, who is a fashion designer, restaurateur and is also the Chairperson of the Modi Group's Family Council. Their daughter, Charu Modi and youngest son, Samir Modi handle the Group's ventures in the higher education and retail and cosmetics sectors respectively.[2] Lalit Modi, the eldest of their two sons is a former cricket administrator and is credited with creating Indian Premier League cricket tournament, which began in 2008.[3]

Personal life

Modi was born on 27 August 1940 in Patiala and was the eldest amongst the five sons and six daughters of the late Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi and Dayawati Modi. His brothers are Vinay Kumar, Satish Kumar, Bhupendra Kumar (B. K. Modi) and Umesh Kumar. He married Bina Modi on 4 December 1961 at the age of 21.[4] They have three children— Charu Modi, Lalit Modi and Samir Modi as well as six grand children— Priyal Bhartia, Ashrant Bhartia, Aliya Modi, Ruchir Modi, Jayati Modi and Vedika Modi.[5]

Business career

As the eldest of Gujarmal's sons, the young Krishan Kumar was thrust into the family business at an early age. In 1959, at the age of just 19, Krishan Kumar accompanied Gujarmal's brother and his uncle, Kedarnath Modi to several European countries, to explore the possibility of purchasing the latest textile machinery to produce higher quality cloth.[6] Managing the textile production in the silk mill was the next project entrusted to him.[7] His biggest opportunity yet, to impose himself arose in 1965, when he was appointed as the Vice-President of Modipon—the then newly established nylon yarn manufacturing unit in Modinagar.[8] The Modi Group of companies, officially separated in 1989, and the various businesses were divided between the five sons of Gujarmal Modi.[9][10] He has since then amassed over forty years of experience in the cigarette manufacturing, pesticides, leather & industrial chemical technology and other sectors.[11] As the head of the Corporate Management Council of Modi Enterprises, he is responsible for leading the Group's ventures in various sectors.[12] In 2010, Krishan Kumar developed a succession plan for Modi Enterprises, which encourages his children i.e. his successors to work together rather than in isolation.[13] He was also considered to be India's 89th richest man in 2012, according to Forbes.[14]
