Kowi Chandra (Chinese: 張國衛) (born 7 March 1986 in Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia[1]) is a former Indonesian badminton player, now representing the United States.

Career

Chandra developed a love and passion for badminton at the age of 7. After intense and rigorous preparation, he was selected to train with the Indonesian national team, which is rated among the best in the world. He spent several years training with the national team, undergoing intense training and conditioning, he was able to win 7 national tournaments, ranked #1 in the country in 2003. At the age of 23, he has already competed in various tournaments, winning the U.S. National Badminton Championships in 2008, to name just one, and was ranked number #1 in the United States for mixed doubles in 2009.

A growing passion for teaching and developing young players prompted him to reverse a professional priorities. In 2010, he accepted an offer from Bay Badminton Club (BBC), one of the largest badminton clubs in Bay Area. As the current coaching director and head-coach of BBC’s training academy in Milpitas, he has become a full-time coach and part-time competitor. His roles in BBC include, but not limited to, the followings: recruiting and supervising new coaches, outlining and structuring the program for badminton academy, and promoting badminton in the U.S. to a higher level of sports.

He marked a record in 2011 when ten of his players who enrolled in his training at Bay Badminton in Milpitas were qualified to compete in the Pan American Junior Championships in Kingston, Jamaica. During the same year. in 2012 he was awarded as High-Performer Coaching Certification Level Two by USA Badminton Organization. Later in 2012, he made his way back to compete in few tournaments. He attained First position for Men Doubles with the former World Champion, Halim Haryanto in US Adult Badminton Championship 2012, as well as the third position for mixed doubles while pairing with one of his students, Lisa Chang.
