Korliss Uecker is an American vocalist (soprano)[1] from Hettinger, North Dakota. With a Masters of Music from Juilliard School, she is a long-term performer for the Metropolitan Opera, and has also sung opera for groups such as Washington Opera, Dallas Opera, Santa Fe Opera and the Spoleto Festival. She has also performed with a number of major orchestras.[2] Uecker has played leading roles in productions such as the world premiere of The Picture of Dorian Gray with Opéra de Monte-Carlo, among others.[3]

Early life, education

Korliss Uecker was born and raised in Hettinger, North Dakota.

Uecker studied singing in highschool, and then studied science and music at the University of North Dakota, where she graduated with both a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts.[3] During college at UND she also sang professionally in a jazz band named Blue Skies, which helped finance her undergraduate studies. She became a registered nurse, and overall worked as a nurse for 13 years. Around this time she won a district audition for the Metropolitan Opera.

In 1983, she was accepted at Juilliard School, where she earned both a Bachelor of Music and Masters of Music.[3] She worked as a nurse as she attended school, chiefly in the medical surgical unit and in orthopedics at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Music career

In 1990, Uecker won an apprenticeship at the Santa Fe Opera, and then earned major roles with the Metropolitan Opera in 1992. She has since regularly appeared onstage with the Metropolitan Opera, and also with a number of opera companies both in the United States and internationally. In the United States, these have included the Glimmerglass Opera,"[4] Washington Opera, Sacramento Opera, Dallas Opera, Santa Fe Opera, the Spoleto Festival, and Hawaii Opera.[2] Others include working with orchestras such as the American Symphony Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as the Ravinia Festival. She also was a soloist with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra in Beethoven's Symphony No. 9.

She has performed on national radio broadcasts and telecasts, and was televised in concert on CBS Sunday Morning, and also televised nationally as part of Live From Lincoln Center during her Mostly Mozart Festival debut.

Uecker has played characters such as the title role in Carlisle Floyd's Susannah, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Mimi in La bohème, Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance,."[2] the premiere of Seymour Barab's Phillip Marshall, Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, the world premiere of Peterson's Sakajawea, Marzelline in Fidelio, Micaëla in Carmen, Oscar in Un ballo in maschera, Valencienne in The Merry Widow, Clorinda in La Cenerentola.

She also notably performed as Stella in A Streetcar Named Desire with Opera National du Rhin in Strasbourg, France, and the role of Sybil in the world premiere of Lowell Lieberman's The Picture of Dorian Gray with Opéra de Monte-Carlo. After the debut, she dined with the Prince of Monaco and his family.
