Importance
Kollam is one of the rare cities in Kerala which is served by rail, road and water transportation facilities. City of Kollam(Quilon) was known as the commercial capital of the princely state of Travancore. Kollam Seaport (now known as Kollam Port) was founded by Mar Abo at Thangasseri in 825, which is the primary water transportation hub that serves the city of Kollam. 3 major lakes in the state namely Ashtamudi, Paravur and Sasthamkotta are the district's major waterways. In addition to that, historic Kollam Canal is also increasing the importance of Kollam city as one of the major water transportation hubs in India. However, KSWTD is running boat services only in the following routes that connect the city:[3][4]
- Kollam - Sampranikkodi
- Kollam - Guhanandapuram
- Kollam - Pezhumthuruthu
- Kollam - Muthiraparamb (West Kallada)
- Kollam - Ayiramthengu
- Kollam - Munroe Island
- Sampranikkodi - Kavanad
- Alappad - Arattupuzha[4]
- Kollam - Alappuzha (Tourist Boat Service)
Location
KSWTD's Kollam boat jetty is situated near Kollam KSRTC Bus Station in Cutchery. The ferry station is situated on the side of Asramam Link Road. The presence of KSWTD boat station and KSRTC Bus Station makes this place the most important transport hub in the city. Kollam is known as Gateway to the backwaters of Kerala. There are two backwater gateways in the city. One among them is situated very close to the jetty.
- Kollam Junction railway station - 2.2 km
- Kollam Port - 2.0 km
- Kollam Beach - 3.3 km
