Kolkata Police community policing initiatives
The Kolkata Police (or Calcutta Police) have attempted to address problems such as crime control with community relations program through a working partenership with the community. Community institutions such as families, media, educational institutions, CSO are key partners with the police and their views are taken seriously for community policing. Community policing formally made a humble beginning in the year 1997 with launching of Nabadishaa (new direction) programs to provide health and educational support to the vulnerable street children with the help of CSO's like Lions Clubs International, Vikramshila foundation. Today the program is active in 30 police stations of Kolkata police and has been accredited with appreciation from UNICEF.
Aftermath
Initiatives taken by Kolkata police are now parts of its culture and have been extremely useful in crime control, traffic management and maintenance of public order. Many police forces in India have studied the Kolkata police community policing model and are in process of implementing them.
