Kobus Van Rensburg (24 October 1952 – 21 December 2013) was a South African author, public speaker, and televangelist.[1] He was the founder of Spirit Word ministries, and an advocate for life gospel. According to his ministry everlasting life or death is a choice, and people can choose to receive eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. He strongly believed that people can be prosperous by practising biblical financial principles e.g. tithing, giving offerings, and having faith.
Early life
Kobus Van Rensburg was born to a God-fearing mother. His father left at an early age. He claimed to have loved Jesus from a small age. On his 7th birthday he gave his life to God in an Evangelistic meeting. He then spent his high school career in a hostel with the wrong friends and, as a result, drifted away from Jesus. By the age of 19, he was caught up with smoking, drinking, drugs and stealing.
In 1971 he joined the South African Air Force and was soon transferred to the Navy to study electrical engineering and also to do an officers course. He furthered his career at Atlas Aircraft Co-op. During his sermons he mentions that after being dismissed from the navy, his mother encouraged him to re consider his life, and he met Jesus again.
At age 24 he was back, returned to Christianity, and within days was preaching in the street corners and praying for the sick. Kobus Van Rensburg attended a full gospel bible college, where he met his wife Annalise Van Rensburg. He did not finish bible college as he claimed that he did not agree with the material being taught in the college. He was then ordained as a full gospel pastor.
Spirit Word Ministries
Spirit Word Ministries which was originally Lofdal ministries is situated in a once declared ghost town, Stilfontein, a small town 8 km from Klerksdorp, in the Northwestern province of South Africa. Spirit Word Ministries was started in 1985.
This church is reaching out to the whole of South Africa and beyond its borders with miracles, signs and wonders. The church branches out into a Television Channel, a Christian School, a Bible School, the Alive for Christ (AFC) student program and also a Youth ministry. People from all over South Africa and other international destinations travel far distances to the Miracle Meetings because of the miracle footage they see on their channel.
Kobus Van Rensburg would take people who can't walk without crutches in front of his congregation and take away their crutches while being filmed, asking them to walk and then show it is a miracle. Some of them leave their crutches fully healed. Spirit Word then uses the footage to glorify God.
