Kirwin Dam

location of Kirwin, Kansas and Kirwin Dam

Kirwin Dam is a dam in Phillips County, Kansas, immediately southwest of the town of Kirwin in the northern part of the state.

The earthen dam was constructed from 1952-1955 by the United States Bureau of Reclamation for irrigation and water storage,[1] partly as a response to the Great Flood of 1951. At 169 feet high and 12,646 feet long at its crest, the dam is owned and operated by the Bureau. Operation and maintenance of the canals, laterals, and drains is the responsibility of the local Kirwin Irrigation District No. 1.[2]

The dam impounds the North Fork of the Solomon River to create Kirwin Reservoir. The reservoir's capacity is 314,500 acre-feet. The Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife administers the water surface and the larger portion of the Kirwin Reservoir lands as the Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge.
