King George Hospital, London

King George Hospital is an NHS hospital in Barley Lane, Goodmayes in the London Borough of Redbridge. The nearest rail stations are Goodmayes (Greater Anglia) and Newbury Park Underground station (Central Line). The hospital is part of the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust - one of the largest in the country, serving a diverse population of around 750,000, also operating Queen's Hospital in Romford.

King George opened at the current site in 1995, offering services including critical care, an accident and emergency department a 24-hour Urgent Care Centre and a specialist rehabilitation services. Its previous location was just over a mile to the west off the Eastern Avenue at Newbury Park.

The BHRUH Trust has been given University status to mark the quality of medical and nursing teaching and training on offer at both sites.

The maternity service at the Trust – operating across both hospitals – was at one time the second largest in the country, delivering about 10,000 babies a year. It closed in 2013.

Wards at King George - a large two-storey building - are named after plants and trees and include Foxglove, Gentian and Cedar.
The King George site is also home to the North East London Independent Sector Treatment Centre.

On 15 December 2010 the joint committee of PCTs voted unanimously to close the A&E and maternity departments despite local public opposition. It is proposed to close the hospital’s A&E unit by 2015 with Queen’s Hospital in Romford due to handle the extra numbers.^[1]
