King Arthur's Gold is an online strategy video game for Windows, Mac and Linux that was developed and published by Transhuman Design.[1]

Development

The team of THD started working on KAG (King Arthur's Gold) at April 18, 2011,[2] the first alpha version was released only 3 days later. The public beta was released silently on the 1st of May 2013.[3] The real release of the game was on the 5th of November 2013.[4] KAG is still under active development as of late 2013, the main focus is on bugfixing, adding minor content and supporting the community to develop content itself.[5]

Gameplay

King Arthur's Gold (abbr. KAG) is a game about mining resources, building castles and destroying your enemies. It is a side-scrolling 2D action multiplayer war game with focus on building, constructing siege machines and intense PvP-combat. Some inspirations for the game are Soldat, Minecraft, Dungeon Keeper, Ace of Spades, and King Arthur's World. In KAG, two teams (by default red and blue) struggle to dominate the other on giant randomly generated or beautiful custom made 2D maps. Nobody remembers why the war started, but the battle is ferocious and never ending.[6]

Classes

In King Arthur's Gold there are three playable classes; Knight, Archer, and Builder. Each class has their own role in KAG and work together to siege/kill the enemy team.

Knights: Knights are the toughest of the three classes and rush the front lines or defend their weaker counterparts, the archer and builder. Knights have a sword that can quickly jab or charge up for a slash. Knights have a utility tool for killing enemies called the bomb. Bombs are used for bombjumping (the act of gaining vertical momentum using a bomb as a source of power), gibbing, taking down towers and countless other things. Bombs have an explosion radius that deals damage to all enemies in the area and the user if they are not sufficiently protected. The knight has 4 hearts and a shield.
Archers: Archers are the disrupting tool of KAG and can shoot down enemies from vast distances. Archers can also climb trees as well as go prone. When prone, the archer blends into the surroundings and appears to be a corpse but can't move. This is useful for scouting and launching surprise attacks on ignorant enemies. The archer has a selection of arrows such as fire, water and bomb arrows each for a niche task. The archer has two hearts making it the least durable class, a knight's slash will instantly kill any number of archers if they are grouped together.
Builders: Builders are perhaps the most important class of the game. The list of things builders can do for themselves, for their team, and to their enemies is endless. Builders are the only class in the game that can build blocks. Blocks comprise wooden or stone doors that open and close for allied teammates. Trap bridges that allow teammates to cross but flip for enemies are useful for making complicated deathtraps. Also available are retracting spikes that activate when enemies touch them, stone blocks that are the basic walls that can be used to your advantage or your defeat, ladders that are useful for besieging enemy towers, and backwall, which is used as a background wall for your tower or bunker that offers structural support without blocking movement. The builder has three hearts and can use a pick for self-defence but can usually only kill enemies already wounded.

Vehicles[7]

Catapults: Fires a multitude of projectiles. By default when loaded with stone it will fire a spray of small boulders. Explosive kegs, bombs, people, crafted large boulders and most game items can be loaded into the catapult with varying outcomes. The catapult is wheeled and can be packed up into a crate again after deployment for mobility.
Balistae: Fires bolts or explosive missiles. Also acts as a spawn point. It is wheeled for limited mobility but cannot be packed up again like a catapult.
Longboats: Fast boat for rushes. It can have siege engines deployed on it but offers little protection from incoming projectiles.
War Ships: Slower armoured ships. Can also have siege engines attached to it. Comes with a mounted bow by default and has a wooden shield to defend occupants from arrows.
Mounted Bows: Can be used by any class to fire arrows with greater speed than an archer. Arrows disintegrate after a certain distance unlike arrows fired by an archer.

Servers[8]

The King Arthur's Gold Beta Server is a relatively lightweight, 32-bit command line application. Freely distributed, this program allows anybody with an internet connection and a computer to host their own King Arthur's Gold server.
