Kiester is a city in Faribault County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 501 at the 2010 census.[6]

History

The city was named for county historian Jacob Kiester.[7]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.44 square miles (1.14 km2), all of it land.[1]

Minnesota State Highway 22 and County Highway 2 are two of the main routes in the community.

Demographics

2010 census

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 501 people, 246 households, and 141 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,138.6 inhabitants per square mile (439.6/km2). There were 281 housing units at an average density of 638.6 per square mile (246.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.4% Asian, 1.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.

There were 246 households of which 20.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.3% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 42.7% were non-families. 40.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.04 and the average family size was 2.67.

The median age in the city was 47.8 years. 17.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 18.8% were from 25 to 44; 29.4% were from 45 to 64; and 26.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 51.5% male and 48.5% female.

2000 census

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 540 people, 254 households, and 161 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,217.0 people per square mile (473.9/km²). There were 278 housing units at an average density of 626.5 per square mile (243.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.89% White, 0.19% African American, 0.19% Asian, 0.74% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.85% of the population.

There were 254 households out of which 22.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% were married couples living together, 5.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.6% were non-families. 35.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.69.

In the city the population was spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 3.5% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 29.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $32,768, and the median income for a family was $40,000. Males had a median income of $29,643 versus $21,786 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,098. About 5.1% of families and 9.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 18.4% of those age 65 or over.

Tornado

A tornado reportedly touched down in the city of Kiester on June 17, 2010.[8] The tornado caused a large amount of destruction, and several homes were damaged.[9] The tornado was later confirmed to be an EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale after damage assessment was completed.[10]
