Khartoum American School, founded in 1957, is an international school in Khartoum, Sudan[1] that teaches an American/international curriculum. The school is a full member of the Council of International Schools (CIS) and is accredited jointly through CIS and the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (MSA).[2]

While originally founded to offer education to the children of US diplomats in Khartoum, KAS later admitted students from the international community in Khartoum. As of 2014 240 students from 44 countries were enrolled. The Early Childhood division offers schooling to children from 2 years old to preschool. The Elementary School encompasses kindergarten through grade 5. Middle School (grades 6-8) serves young adolescents and the High School division offers a college-preparatory education to students in grades 9-12.

Class size ranges from 12 to 22 students.

Governance

The school is independent and governed by a School Board comprising parents of current KAS students who are elected by the General Meeting of the KAS Association.[3] The Board has eight elected parent members and one member appointed by the US ambassador.[3] The Board delegates the day-to-day operation of the school to the superintendent, who oversees a faculty of 35. Greg Hughes became superintendent in 2010.

Renovation

In the early twentyfirst century the school's facilities were renovated. A "Nursery Cottage" was constructed and the preschool classrooms and play areas were renovated in the summer of 2007. The 8,000-volume library was renovated in 2006. The IT infrastructure and the computer lab were renovated in the 2007-08 school year, and a climate-controlled environment set up.
