Kerry Mayo (born 21 September 1977) is an English former professional footballer who played as a left back.
Career
Born in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, Mayo was a trainee with Brighton & Hove Albion and signed a professional contract with them in July 1996. He played over 400 games for the club, becoming one of its longest-serving players. Mayo's wife is also named Kerry, leading Brighton fans to sing 'Two Kerry Mayos, there's only two Kerry Mayos', a homage to their earlier song about Gary Stevens.
On 6 May 2008, it was confirmed that Mayo, along with experienced trio Guy Butters, Gary Hart and Paul Reid had been released from the club by then manager Dean Wilkins.[2] Hart and Mayo signed new contracts after impressing during pre-season under new manager Micky Adams.[3]
In September 2008 Mayo joined Conference National team Lewes on loan for a month.[4] Mayo returned to Brighton on 10 October after suffering cruciate knee ligament damage[5]
It was announced on 12 May 2009, that Mayo would be leaving Brighton after the expiry of his contract at the end of June 2009.[6] During his 14 years at Brighton, Mayo played in 413 league & cup games and scored 12 goals. On 14 July 2009, Mayo announced his retirement from professional football after failing to recover from a groin/hip injury.[7]
On 18 November 2010, Mayo decided to join his local side Newhaven where he scored in a 4-2 win over Pease Pottage[8]
