Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Powai
KV (Kendriya Vidyalaya) IIT Powai, is an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) secondary school affiliated to CBSE board in Mumbai, India. It is part of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and has about 2000 students. The total strength is about 1920 students. The school is located in IIT Mumbai campus in Powai, a suburb in north western Mumbai.
Curriculum
The classes are divided into 3 sections-Primary (1st to 5th), Secondary (6th to 10th) and higher secondary (11th to 12th). The school functions from Monday to Saturday except second Saturdays. However, all Saturdays are closed for primary.
The primary section studies English, Hindi, Mathematics, Environmental, Studies and extra subjects like Music, WEXP, Computer, PT and Art. The upper primary section studies Science, Mathematics, English, Social Science and extra subjects likeYoga, Library, Computer, Art, SUPW and PT.
Competitions
The KV Sangathan interschool sports meet is held every year at 4 levels- Clusters, Regionals, Nationals, SGFI. SOF olympiads are held every year with many participants. Along with that several calligraphy, elocution, debates and quizes that are held under CCA Co-Curricular Activities).
History
In 1958, the Indian Institute of Technology of Bombay was created, with retired Brigadier S.K.Bose as its first director. In 1959 the Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone of the Powai campus.
Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan is an autonomous body set up by the Indian Ministry of Education. To cater to the educational needs of the children of IIT employees, K.V. IIT Powai started functioning with three hundred students on 15 June 1964 under the leadership of Professor S.K. Bose as the first chairman of the Vidyalaya. Shri. S. Ramchandran was the first principal of the Vidyalaya, composed of 25 staff members.
The school has divisions for the Primary, Secondary and Senior Secondary Sections. It is a co-educational institution, with classes from I to XII, affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi.
Over the last forty years, the Vidyalaya has received guidance and support from the ten directors of IIT-Bombay and ten Principals of the Vidyalaya. Attendance is more than two thousand students. It celebrated its golden jubilee in the year 2013.
