Kenneth Robert Giles (born September 20, 1990) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball.
Career
Giles was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 44th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft out of Rio Grande High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He did not sign and attended Yavapai College. He was then drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the seventh round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft. He made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast Phillies that year. He spent the 2012 season with the Lakewood BlueClaws and Clearwater Threshers. In 2013 he returned to Clearwater.[1] He pitched only 25 2⁄3 innings due to injuries.[2] After the season he pitched in the Arizona Fall League.[3] He started 2014 with the Reading Phillies and was promoted to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in May.[4]
On June 7, 2014, Giles was promoted to the major leagues for the first time.[5][6] His first victory came on August 10.[7] Trailing the New York Mets 6–1 midway through the game, the Phils had pulled to within 1 run when he pitched a scoreless top of the 9th inning. The Phils scored 2 in the bottom of the inning leading to his first win.[8]
Giles' fastball has hit as high as 103 miles per hour.[9][10]
On September 1, 2014, Giles struck out the side in the 8th inning of a combined no-hitter against the Atlanta Braves.[11]
On September 20, 2014, Giles picked up his first major league career save against the Oakland Athletics. He struck one out and retired the last 2 batters.
