Kawempe Division
Kawempe Division is one of the five divisions that make up the city of Kampala, Uganda. The city's five divisions are: (a) Kampala Central Division (b) Kawempe Division (c) Lubaga Division (d) Makindye Division and (e) Nakawa Division.
Location
Kawempe Division is in the northwestern corner of the city, bordering Wakiso District to the west, north and east, Nakawa Division to the southeast, and Kampala Central to the south, and Lubaga Division to the southwest. The coordinates of the division are:00 23N, 32 33E (Latitude:0.3792; Longitude:32.5574). The neighborhoods in Kawempe Division include: Kawempe, Jinja-Kawempe, Kanyanya, Kazo, Mpererwe, Kisaasi, Kikaya, Kyebando, Bwaise, Komamboga, Makerere, Mulago, Makerere and Wandgeya.[1]
Overview
Arguably, Kawempe Division has the lowest income per capita of all the city's five divisions, it is also the largest division in Kampala, with an estimated population in excess of 265,000, according to the 2002 national population census.[2] Kawempe Division has a high mortality and morbidity burden compared to its four sister divisions in the city. A survey in 2013, ranked it highest in HIV/AIDS transmission out of the five divisions within Kampala.[3] Crime is also of concern. The division has an alarmingly high crime rate.[4]
