Kaththi is the soundtrack album of the 2014 Indian Tamil action thriller film of the same name written and directed by AR Murugadoss. Anirudh Ravichander composed the soundtrack album and background score for the film. The soundtrack album consists of five tracks and two theme music versions. Several modified versions of Bad Eyes and Kaththi Theme were played in the movie.[1] It was digitally released on iTunes on 17 September 2014.[2] The album was released officially on 18 September 2014 at the Leela Palace Hotel in Chennai.[3]

Development

Anirudh composed the theme music four days after signing the film,[4] which was featured in the digital first look poster.[5] He later added that the album would feature two theme music versions.[6] In April 2014, two more songs were produced after which Anirudh confirmed that 3 of the songs were completed.[7][8][9] The next month, Bollywood music director Vishal Dadlani sang a track for the film.[10] In August 2014, Andrea Jeremiah and singer Adhi of Hiphop Tamizha had each recorded a song.[11] Hiphop Tamizha said that he had used classic Tamil words in the song.[12] Keba Jeremiah played the guitar for one song which he labelled as "a soul stirring melody".[13][14] Lyricist Madhan Karky called one of the songs he wrote a "stylish folk number".[15] Vijay was reported to sing a "love kuththu" number.[16] In early September 2014, Vijay finished recording his song, titled "Selfie Pulla" and the team went to London to shoot its song sequence.[17] Anirudh confirmed on 14 September 2014 that K. J. Yesudas had recorded a song for the film.[18]

Ma Ka Pa Anand hosted the audio launch along with VJ Priyanka.[25] Anirudh and Hiphop Tamizhan Adhi were part of stage performances.[26] People who were invited to the audio launch included VTV Ganesh, Kalaipuli S. Critical reception

The album received positive reviews from critics and topped the iTunes India Charts.[27][28] Durgesh Haridas of The Indian Express stated,"The OST is arguably the best for a Vijay movie in recent times and Anirudh’s variety and experimentation is helping him establishing himself as one of Kollywood’s top music makers.", and labelled "Selfie Pulla" as "a number that even kids will be humming." adding that the song "doesn't disappoint".[29] K. Siddharth of Sify rated the album 3.5 out of 5, labelling "Pakkam Vanthu" as "Anirudh’s show all the way!" and conlcuded by saying that "Anirudh delivers a fresh soundtrack that works for most parts!".[30] Behindwoods chose "Selfie Pulla", "Nee Yaaro" and "Aathi" as the album's picks and also gave 3.5 out of 5 stars, concluding that "Anirudh officially kick starts Kaththi celebrations !".[31] Indiaglitz summarised, "This is the best OST for a Vijay starrer in the recent years, and Anirudh has made full use of the given opportunity to establish himself as one of the best among the current lot.", and gave the album 3.5 out of 5 as well.[32] Vipin of Music Aloud chose "Nee Yaaro" as the pick of the soundtrack and concluded that Kaththi was a "good mix of songs from Anirudh that should work well for an Ilayathalapathy movie.", giving the album 8 out of 10 stars.[33]
