Kathryn Tappen

Kathryn Tappen (born April 9, 1981) is an American sportscaster who works as a host and reporter for NBC Sports Group, covering NHL Live, Football Night in America, Notre Dame Football, and more. She joined NBC Sports Group as part of NBC Olympics' coverage of the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games, and will join NBC Olympics’ production of the 2016 Rio Olympics and 2018 Pyeongchang, and NBC Sports’ coverage from Super Bowl XLIX.[1]

Early life

Kathryn Tappen was born in Morristown, New Jersey. She attended Rutgers University on academic and athletic scholarships[2] and was an Academic All-American as a member of the track and cross country teams,[2] the same Rutgers Scarlet Knights that produced 2012 Olympian Julie Culley.[3]

Kathryn began running as a freshman in high school (1995) as a way to stay in shape for her other athletic activities, namely basketball in the winter, and softball in the spring.[3] She continued running every season through senior year.[3] Due to a back injury, she had to Redshirt freshman year cross country and indoor.[3]

Career

Tappen began her career at CSTV in 2003, where she hosted a variety of programs. She then spent a year and a half at NBC affiliate WJAR in Providence, Rhode Island as the weekend anchor and weekday sports reporter.[4]

In 2006, Tappen joined New England Sports Network (NESN), where she served as studio host for Boston Bruins games and as a lead anchor for SportsDesk. Tappen left NESN in 2011 for the NHL Network.[5]

In 2014, Tappen hosted hockey on NBC Sports during the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi for her first Olympic assignment. She also filled in for Liam McHugh on NHL Live at times during 2014 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs on NBC Sports Network.
