Kasarani is a residential area in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, the largest economy in the East African Community.[1]
Location
The neighborhood is located along the Thika Road, approximately 16 kilometres (9.9 mi), by road, northeast of Nairobi's central business district.[2] The coordinates of Kasarani are:1°13'44.0"S, 36°54'16.0"E (Latitude:-1.228889; Longitude:36.904444). [3]
Naming
It is thought that the name "Kasarani" originated from a river that flows through the area which has the Kikuyu name "Gathara-ini" River.
Population
Karasani's population is estimated to be in excess of 200,000, as at March 2015.. The neighborhood is subdivided into various wards, which include Roysambu, Mwiki, Hunters and Warren. Kasarani has a parliamentary constituency Kasarani Constituency named after it in Nairobi County.[4][5] It borders Juja Constituency in Kiambu county.
Economy
Kasarani covers a very vast area and includes a national stadium named after former President Daniel arap Moi known as Moi International Sports Centre. USIU Africa, SportView Hotel, Safari Park Hotel are present in Kasarani. Recently the Thika Road Mall (TRM) was opened in Kasarani near Thika Road fly-over just before the Roysambu bus terminus.
