Karel van Steenhoven (Voorburg, The Netherlands, 1958) is a recorder player and composer.
Steenhoven studied recorder with Kees Boeke at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam and composition with Robert Heppener and Tristan Keuris.
In 1978 he is a founding member of the Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet along with Daniël Brüggen, Bertho Driever and Paul Leenhouts. Steenhoven has also worked with Musica Antiqua Köln, The Academy of Ancient Music, Cologne Chamber Orchestra and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.
In 1995, Steenhoven was appointed professor of recorder at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe. He was a jury member at the International Moeck Recorder Competition in 1997, the ARS Composition Contest in 2006, and the ERTA composition competition in 2011. He is a visiting professor at various conservatories including Berlin, Odense, Nuremberg and Zurich. Steenhoven has been associated with Schott Music as a composer since 2008.
