Kardemir Demir Çelik Karabükspor is a Turkish sports club based in Karabük, Turkey. The team was founded in 1969 after a unity between Karabük Gençlikspor and Demir Çelik Spor. The club serves in branches as football, wheelchair basketball and volleyball. Currently, the football team plays in Süper Lig. Throughout the years, Karabükspor has included such notable players as Ali Yavaş, Selami Sarı, Hakan Ünsal, Vedat İnceefe, İbrahim Üzülmez and İbrahim Kaş in its squad. The nickname of the club is Mavi Ateş (Blue Flame). Moreover, its fan base is also known as Mavi Ateş. The nickname comes from unfading blue flame coming out of one of the chimneys of Kardemir iron-steel works which is located in the entrance of the city. As the factory gives name to the club, the team is cited as a worker's team.

The club is known as one of the clubs that has completed facilities in Turkey. Modern sports facilities of the club was completed around 1993–94 season which include training-fitness grounds and cross and running tracks.

History

Foundation and Early History

In the year 1938, Azmi Tılabar, the head manager of Turkish iron-steel industry, founded D.Ç. Gençlik Kulübü (D.Ç. Youth Club) with grey-blue colours and put the first step into sports regarding the city. After 1938, sports branches have been trained by notable sportspersons of Turkey. In these times, the trainer of football team was an English engineer, Mr. Lain. The trainer of atlhletism was Turkish National Athlete Faik Önen. Moreover, Mersinli Ahmet and Yaşar Doğu was trainers of wrestling.

During the 1940s, Karabükspor became a symbol in cycling, tennis and wrestling around Turkey. Starting in the 1950s, the Karabük Gençlikspor (Karabuk Youth Sports) joined DÇ Gençlik Kulübü and finally, the club got its colours as red-blue and started showing itself in Turkish sports circle.

League participations

1993-94 season

In the last game of 1993–94 season against Zeytinburnuspor, Karabükspor relegated from Turkish Super League after a 90-minute goal which has given an astonishment to both Karabük and Turkey.

Second stint in First League: 1997–99

Karabükspor promoted again to First League after finishing as champions of Promotion Play-Off in 1996–97 season. Karabükspor lived the best season in 1997–98 and finished 8th. However, next season was disastrous for them and relegated at last place with just 5 wins to Second League.

Karabükspor finished below first two places at Fourth Classification Group of Second League in 2000–01 and relocated in Second League B Category in 2001–02 season.

Recent history

The team has promoted to TFF First Division (Bank Asya 1. Lig) after a 7–0 win against Erzurumspor in 2007–08 season in Promotion Group as runner-ups and currently leading the league and guaranteed to promote to Turkish Super League in the next season and they are the favorites to win their league. On their 30th game of the 2009–10 season, they won 3–0 against Çaykur Rizespor which meant they were promoted to the Turkish Super League after 11 years.

Supporters

The club are sponsored by the Kardemir company and the Iron workers unions from whom they draw a lot of their support. Their ultra group is called ‘Mavi Ateş’ (Blue Flame) and their motto is, ‘Dumanlı kentin puslu çocukları’ (Sons of the smoky city).[1]
