Karaoke on the Maidan
Karaoke on the Maidan - one of the most popular TV projects in Ukraine. Its rates and shares are very high. It was on air during more than 10 years. Ihor Kondratuk is a presenter and coauthor of this TV show. Andrey Kozlov (What? Where? When? magister) who is a godfather of Kondratuk’s child is as well a coauthor of TV show “Karaoke on the Maidan”. This format had been beamed in Russia on TV channel “31” (Feb. 1997 – till the end of 1999) before it started in Ukraine on TV channel Inter in 1999. TV channel 1+1 bought the right to broadcast it on air in 2007.
Program "Karaoke on the Maidan" has several episodes
- a crowd of people is gathering on the street and everyone is a potential participant of the game;
- a presenter sing a song together with the crowd;
- he chooses at his discretion those people who were singing that song better than others for further game;
- among those who were chosen the crowd has to elect the ones who will take part in the final episode of the program;
- the finalists are gathering money in the crowd to find out who is the winner;
- the one who has gathered more money is the winner.
Ihor Kondratuk’s copyright protection in the Court
One of Ukrainian media outlets illegally created a project “Karaoke near the Fountain”, which was a copy of “Karaoke on the Maidan” format. The proceeding in a case lasted 3 years. Attorneys-at-law Natalia Subota and Andrii Nechyporenko represented Ihor Kondratuk’s interests in the court. The presenter of the program and co-author Ihor Kondratuk visited court sessions by himself.
This case is a unique one, because it is a first and a successful attempt of copyright protection in Ukraine, in particular the copyright protection of TV program format.
TV Show "Chance" — an ideological continuation of "Karaoke on the Maidan"
A new format of Ihor Kondratuk “Chance” with Andrii Kuzmenko and Natalia Mohylevska as presenters became an ideological continuation of TV show “Karaoke on the Maidan”. The finalists who had won in “Karaoke on the Maidan” became as well the participants of the other program – “Chance”. During one day they had to prepare performance with help hair designers, make-up artists and producers and to present it at the end of the day.
