Kanyaka Talkies (Malayalam: കന്യകാ ടാക്കീസ്‌, English translation: Virgin Talkies) is an upcoming Indian film. It is the debut feature film by K R Manoj, national award winning documentary film maker.[1] The movie revolves around a B-grade movie theater of the 80s and 90s.[2] While weaving a gripping story around the transformation of the theater into a church, Kanyaka Talkies delves deep into the matrix of body, desire, pleasure and guilt.The film passes through the less traveled landscapes of regional cinema and presents an intimate portrayal of its history and contemporary.[3][4] Kanyaka Talkies is based on a story by P. V. Shajikumar. The film uses Sync sound technology. Location sound of the film is handled by the National Award winning recordist Harikumar Madhavan Nair and sound design is done by Luxembourg-based sound artist Rajivan Ayyappan.[5][6]

Kanyaka Talkies was the opening film of the Indian Panorama at the 44th International Film Festival of India[7] at Goa. It was also selected to the competition section of the 15th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival, Bengaluru International Film Festival, Pune International Film Festival and in the Malayalam Cinema Today section of the 18th International Film Festival of Kerala.[8][9][10][11][12] Kanyaka Talkies has received the International Critics Prize (FIPRESCI Prize) for Best Malayalam Film at the 18th International Film Festival of Kerala for its succinct and poignant dealing of the politics of Cinema, human desire and religion.[13]Forbes India magazine has selected it as one of the five must watch Indian movies in 2014.[14]
