Kanopy is an online video streaming service for tertiary educational institutions internationally, distributing films from BBC, PBS, Media Education Foundation, Documentary Educational Resources, and many other production houses. Kanopy has been described as “...a leading distributor of online educational videos”[1] and as “...the YouTube or the Netflix of the education sector...”.[2] As of 2014, Kanopy’s catalog of videos has grown to offer over 25,000 videos to seven million students and academics[3] across the US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the Middle East, and Asia.
History
Kanopy was founded by Olivia Humphrey in 2008 in Perth, Western Australia after a ten year career in media rights management[4] at BBC and Roadshow Entertainment.[5] The business originally began distributing DVDs to university libraries from Ms Humphrey’s home garage.[6] Kanopy then began Internet video streaming of educational videos within Australia, securing contracts with all 39 of Australia’s universities within the company’s first five years.[7] Today, Kanopy has expanded to New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Middle East, South Africa and a head office operating in San Francisco, California.[8]
Business Model
Kanopy is an aggregator of video content between filmmakers and university libraries. Kanopy licenses videos to universities through the Kanopy streaming platform where they purchase licenses that give them unlimited access to a video. A number of applications are used to encourage student engagement and viewership.[9] Kanopy’s business model is described as being transparent and collaborative for both filmmakers and university libraries.[10] Kanopy's royalty model gives filmmakers and distributors a majority share of each sale and the video portal offers live statistics for both librarians and filmmakers to understand student viewership.[11]
