Kanatal is a city in Uttarakhand, 78 km ahead of Dehradun (Capital of State Uttarakhand), 38 km ahead of Mussoorie which is also known as the Queen of Hills & 12 km from Chamba. Kanatal is a hamlet built around numerous hills, a locale which personifies the romantic aura of Tehri District, Uttarakhand, State. Located on the Chamba-Mussoorie highway.
With a spectacular view of the snow-covered hills and the green forests, Kanatal, Uttarakhand welcomes a large number of visitors every year. Kanatal is situated nearly 300 km from Delhi at an altitude of over 8500 feet (2590 meters). By virtue of the natural beauty of this place Kanatal allures many tourists every year.
History
A few years ago there used to be a lake by the name of Kanatal, now it doesn’t exist. To make it memorable, the place was named KANATAL. Surkunda Devi is a very sacred temple in Kanatal, dedicated to Sati Ji; Kanatal is the place where Shankar Ji brought her dead body on his trishul from Haridwar. Located at a height of 9995 feet, you get a 360-degree view from the top of the temple. This temple is located 8 km on the road towards Mussoorie to Kaddukhal. One has to trek 2 km on foot to the little temple. Ponies are also available here.
Known for its mesmerizing beauty, beautiful sights, verdant forests, invigorating winds and tranquil weather, Kanatal presents a perfect getaway from Delhi. It’s a small little town near Mussoorie, relatively unknown to the outside world. Easily accessible by road, train or even by air it provides the perfect retreat from the hassles of daily life - a perfect place to have a word with nature in its purest form.
Climate
A pleasant and relaxing weather throughout the year, Kanatal is lovely weekend getaway from the scorching heat, humidity and pollution laden atmosphere of the metro cities. The temperature here hovers between 10-20 degrees Celsius in summers. In winters, it presents a mesmerizing sight of snow carpeted grounds and trees presenting a white wonderland& temperature lies in between 5-10 degrees. The location experience heavy snow fall blocking roads in winters. Due to high altitude the place unpredictably faces High Wind Pressure Storms some times in a year.

Geography
Kanatal has an average elevation of about 8500 feet (2590 meters). The highest point is Surkunda Devi Temple, at a height of about 9,995 feet (get a 360 degree view from the top of the temple). There is scarcity of water, temperature in winters go freezing. The roads are blocked with show often crystallized & hard as glass enough to skid vehicles thousands of meters down in the valley.
Accessibility
Kanatal is conveniently connected by road to Delhi and major cities. The closest railway station & airport is Dehradun. Taxis are easily available for Kanatal. Throughout the year is the best time to visit because in summers you can stay away from heat & in winters enjoy snowfall there.
Places of Interest
- Tehri Dam - The Tehri Dam at New Tehri is quite famous. This dam is built on the confluence of River Bhagirathi and Bhilangna and make for an interesting visit. While at New Tehri, also visit the Pant Research Institute where various kinds of fruits and plants are grown.
- Kodia Jungle - Just a km away on the road towards Chamba, this place is a very nice picnic spot. A levelled walk of 7 to 8 km will see dense forests, suddenly opening up into a vast expanse of undulating hills and valleys. Tiny, gurgling natural springs come along the way. The track is also jeepable. If you are lucky you could spot a few wild animals.
- Mussoorie - Mussoorie is 37 km from Kanatal and is a popular tourist destination that hardly needs an introduction. Mussoorie also called the Queen of the Hills is a favourite among travellers especially from Delhi and nearby areas. There is quite a bit to do in Mussoorie. One can visit Kempty falls, take a stroll on the Mall Road or the Camel’s back road. The place is filled with game centres, restaurants, and local shops.
- Chamba - About 16 km from Kanatal is the hamlet of Chamba, Uttarakhand. Chamba is untouched and untamed by the vices of urbanisation and commercialisation. About 1600 meters above the sea level, this place is more quite than Mussoorie and offers an opportunity to relax and rejuvenate.
- Dhanaulti - At a distance of 12 km from Kanatal and 30 km from Mussoorie, Dhanaulti is like a cool winter breeze. Unspoilt by commercialisation, one can feel the nature here. Treks, pony rides along fruit orchards and water streams appearing from nowhere can keep you busy as there is no mall for shopping or video games. Roads to Dhanaulti are not so bad and this can be a place worth visiting.
- Shivpuri - About 75 km from Kanatal and close to Rishikesh is Shivpuri, where you can enjoy rafting. Shivpuri is perhaps the most convenient and popular rafting destination close to Delhi. Best time to go rafting is from September to October and then from March to May. It is closed in the monsoon season.
